Two charter pilots reported seeing a reflective, upright object over Ohio on August 16, 2026. A newly published investigation gives the encounter more context—but also shows why its measurements should be treated as estimates, not established flight data.
The National UFO Reporting Center’s October 26 account describes a pill-shaped object near a thunderstorm in the Tiffin area. NUFORC says investigator Ben Hansen interviewed the captain and obtained radar data and air-traffic-control audio through a Freedom of Information Act request. Those are useful avenues for investigation, but they do not establish what the object was.
The underlying sighting record, listed under Republic, Ohio, initially gives a size of 10–20 feet and a closest distance of five nautical miles. Its follow-up interview records the pilot reconsidering the distance and describing a larger object. The later overview gives a closest approach of about two miles and an estimated height of at least 30 feet.
