A US Navy fighter jet and a helicopter crashed into the South China Sea in separate incidents on Sunday while operating from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, the US Pacific Fleet said.
According to a Pacific Fleet statement released late Sunday, both aircraft were conducting routine operations when they went down within 30 minutes of each other.
A Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 was the first to crash, followed by an F/A-18F Super Hornet from Strike Fighter Squadron 22. Both units are based aboard the Nimitz.
