In 1996, theorists predicted that a flat carbon sheet built from pentagons and heptagons, instead of graphene’s hexagons, would behave like a metal. Three decades later, chemists in China have made a narrow ribbon with that structure and measured the current through it. Their study in Nature reports a carbon nanoribbon that carries electrons with little scattering, close to the limit of a single quantum channel.
