A false AI intelligence report almost triggered a war with China, according to reports.
Members of the US military came close to boarding a Chinese ship in the Middle East, after being told the vessel was carrying nuclear weapons components.
Military aircraft were also close at hand, CNN reported.
However, when officials scrutinised the report more closely, it emerged that a chatbot in the AI programme had misidentified what was on board the vessel.
The bot combined the intelligence information about the ship’s manifest produced by US Special Operations Command Pacific, based in Hawaii and other secret signals.
The report was false, but “it almost started a war”, one source told CNN.
There are fears that the incident could have escalated dramatically.
