The first-of-its-kind synthetic human DNA is in the making by UK scientists.
On June 26, the Wellcome Trust, the world’s largest medical charity, committed an initial £10 million to the Synthetic Human Genome Project (SynHG).
The concept of synthesizing a human genome, or writing life from scratch, has been considered taboo.
Why the controversy? Some worry this research could result in “designer babies” or lead to unpredictable, perhaps negative, changes for future generations.
On the other hand, the project could provide fresh insights into various diseases and lead to new treatments.
