Last month, The White House 2026 budget proposals recommended the introduction of $1 billion of new investments for Mars-focused programs, in addition to $7 billion for lunar exploration, with the objective being to ensure “America’s human space exploration efforts remain unparalleled, innovative and efficient.”

Indeed, NASA and SpaceX continue to pursue the goal of Mars. The main scientific motivation is the potential discovery of water and past or present life, as well as the long-term prospect of human settlements as a safeguard against terrestrial cataclysms. The exploration of Mars is seen as an ambitious scientific goal and a new phase in human history. But is it necessary to go to Mars, or would it be better to take a little more care of our Earth?
