The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) requires thinking about what kind of signals we should look for and what they might indicate about alien civilizations. In 1964, Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed a classification system to categorize hypothetical alien civilizations based on their energy usage. This became known as the Kardashev Scale.
