In 2014, a team of astrophysicists reported the detection of an unusual emission line in X-ray light from the Perseus cluster, a cluster of galaxies 240 million light-years from Earth. A new interpretation of this detection and follow up observations may provide an explanation of the puzzling signal. If confirmed with future observations, this may represent a major step forward in understanding the nature of the mysterious, invisible substance that makes up about 85% of matter in the Universe.
“We expect that our result will either be hugely important or a total dud. I don’t think there is a halfway point when you are looking for answers to one of the biggest questions in science,” said Dr. Joseph Conlon, a researcher at the University of Oxford and the lead author of a paper published in the journal Physical Review D (arXiv.org preprint).
