Scientists have proposed launching a satellite to tackle the increasingly serious problem of space junk in orbit around Earth.

The plan, submitted by researchers at the Italian Space Agency, involves launching a craft with a propellant kit on its front.

This would then force larger pieces of space junk to their doom in Earth's atmosphere, it is claimed, and prevent them from taking out communications satellites or hitting the International Space Station (ISS).
